I go to Curves and can recommend it. The staff are all very nice and if you are committed, you will definitely lose weight.

how are their membership prices like? do they do a month's membership or must we sign a contract?

You can go for a free first session. Then you can go and pay month by month, or join up for a year. If you pay for a month as you go along, it's $588 a month. If you join up for a year, it's $488 a month. I elected to pay the higher monthly fee just to see whether I'd like it first rather than commit myself for longer. Also, if you decide to join up for the year and pay up front, it's even cheaper.
When you join up, you get weighed and measured and they do a BMI test and check body fat ratio, then every month they do it again and so you can see what progress you've made.
It really suits me because the whole workout only takes 30 minutes and as it's a circuit, you don't have to fit in with a timetable of classes, you can go anytime you like.

Hi Shoe Girl,
thanks for the info. Is there somebody that will do exercise with you as you go along?

During your first visit, one of the staff will go on every machine and show you how to use it, then you have a go, and if you're doing it incorrectly, they will show you the right way. It's not a normal type gym like California FItness. It's a circuit and they have about 12 machines and each machine works a different body area. So you spend 30 seconds on one machine, then go on a board and either jog or march for 30 seconds, then go on another machine for another 30 seconds, etc. The whole idea is to get your heart rate up whilst you're on the machine, then on the running board you keep it up. You stop the circuit every 8 minutes to check your heart rate just to make sure you're working out at the proper pace.
The Momski, the other good thing about this gym is that nearly all the members are normal shaped women as opposed to those gyms with a lot of "stick insects", so it's not intimidating.
If you want some more info, send me an email.
Good luck.
