Taipei prices and places to stay

I'm thinking of spending a few days in Taipei. Can anyone tell me how the cost of eating, getting around etc compares - either to Hong Kong, or to mainland China? Thanks!

I'd also appreciate any recommendations for somewhere to stay - budget level.

There was a post a few weeks ago regarding places to go in Taipei. If anyone has any other suggestions, I'd love to hear them.

(I live in Guangzhou, and curiously no bookshop seems to stock travel guides to Taiwan . . .)

Taipei has plenty of decent 2 1/2 to 3 star hotels and great places to see and experience, lots of street vendors selling good food, and reasonable beer houses http://www.lonelyplanet.com/worldguide/destinations/asia/taiwan/taipei/sleep
