I am planning on travelling from Guangzhou to Vietnam (Hanoi) during the first week of July and I am in need of some solid advice concerning my best options.
I have researched many possible routes, including flights, buses, and trains. It seems that there are so many different options; I am hoping someone has some practical experience that they can share to help me pick the best one. I would like to fly to save time, but I am ready to do what ever it takes to save money.
I've looked into this for myself and I was so disheartened to learn the expanse of such a short flight from GZ/HK to Hanoi. I don't know anything about the trains, but I did come up with somewhat of a solution: fly Air Asia from Macau (or Shenzhen starting this summer) to Bangkok. Once in Bangkok you can take another Air Asia flight to Hanoi. This seems so backwards and silly but it's 3000 yuan cheaper than anything CX has to offer. You should be able to do R/T for 2,800 yuan.
This is not for the faint of heart, but I am considering taking a flight to Beihai and then a boat to Halong Bay and then on up to Hanoi. But I'm interested in some touring along the way so not in a hurry to get from point A to point B. BTW, do you realize how hot it will be then?!!
easier and quicker and cheaper to get the overnight bus from Wan Chai to Nanning then bus or train from there to hanoi. i'm doing it in June. beware the bus in nanning leaves at 8am, so you'll have to book it and spend the night there.
wow, Air Asia are going to start flying from Shenzhen to Bangkok in the summer.... that is so sweet. As i have always been put off by the Macau idea. I have got by on cheap flights (RMB1,500-1,600)from Hong Kong with lesser known airlines, but it would be cheaper still with Air Asia (I would miss the meals and the free wine though!!)
