Has anyone ever tried to hook up a US satellite tv service, like DirecTV, here in Hong Kong? Is there any way to get US channels on your main tv? I know ways to watch through computer but I want a bigger screen and better reception than that offers.
The DirecTV satellite is located over the equator due south of Texas. You're not going to see it from HK
Check the back of your computer to see if your video card has either S video or RCA jacks for video. If so, connect it to your TV. If not, consider a new video card.
Although you say you know how to watch TV through the computer, you don't say what you're doing. Are you streaming video from sites? Are you using a slingbox? Are you downloading torrents?
If you're using a slingbox or streaming, yes, the quality isn't perfect, but I find my slingbox is pretty good. And of course it is live TV! Using the video card output, I watch it on my LCD TV.
If you are downloading torrents, the quality is usually very watchable. I again use the video card output to watch it on my TV.
Other options for torrents include burning to a DVD or CD and watching on a divx-capable DVD player.
You can also download torrents to a personal media palyer such as TVix. It is a USB media player that works just like both a USB hard drive and a VCR. It has all the connections of a VCR, so after you have the files on TVix, you simply press play on your TVix remote control and watch whatever torrents you have downloaded.
Many options to watch North American TV, just need to find which one you want to use.
Take a look at the "Practical" forum. There are lots of SAT posts there. I am in Guangzhou and I have a SAT feed from the Philippines. Much better than Chinese TV. :)
you can get live US and UK TV in Asia now. It was posted by somebody yesterday on another thread. apparently it is 150USD a month, but provides the same package as you would get in the US or UK
